  1. Great for me but bad for bank balance - am living one block from Omnivore bookshop for cooks
  2. It is chucking it down, haven't got a raincoat yet, or a hat, and the only umbrella I can use is one of the girls. Hope it stops by 2.15.
  3. All in. Three very sweaty men at the end of it. I was directing things (ha!) so am still cool - now we just have to put everything together!
  4. But not for long - furniture is arriving as we speak
  5. We are online at our new apartment! Sitting on floor to type though.
  6. Just seen first segway. Man looked like extra from Woody Allen's Sleepers in silver helmet.
  7. Drinking very good coffee from cafe 20 yards from new home - also sells cakes and books. Perfect!
  8. Two weeks into new life in California - what do I miss most? Radio 4 - thank God for Listen again
  9. Another day, another shopping expedition. Looking forward to when I don't have to buy yet more stuff.
  10. At high school volleyball game in Napa valley. Go Saints!
  11. @matt_massie Well my grandfather wore one in India in the 1930s... so it just makes me think of the British Empire!
  12. Just saw a postman in what looks like a pith helmet - is this their uniform??
  13. Now I'm in US, my feet are a size & a half bigger but I've gone down a dress size - hard not to picture a beanpole with clown feet
  14. Daughter wants our satnav to do a Welsh accent - not sure there's a market but it would be nice to hear it tell us to "go by there"
  15. Watching a hummingbird on a tree by my deck. A hummingbird! Outside my kitchen!
  16. Shopping today. Ostensibly for school uniform but we'll see what else we can slip in. @tom_e_white went to work so he can't police us!
  17. Me: "Americans must like shopping" Tom: "There were people there who were enjoying it. I could tell." A man who wasn't enjoying Target.
  18. Oh joy. I've emigrated but I still seem to be in a queue to speak to an adviser at BT...
  19. Older daughter: "Mama, the French sticks are the only American bread I like".
  20. @SarahM Just do it. I left mine in the UK and already miss it. You won't regret it.
