  1. The figure kneeled and grabbed a handful of dirt, then let it sift back to the earth through open fingers. "She lay here," came a whisper.
  2. At the foot of a particularly large tree, light cast a weak glow on a hooded figure enveloped in dark green robes.
  3. The rays peeked through the canopy of limbs and leaves, waking all manner of creatures from their lightless slumbers.
  4. Magic spells, ages old, funneled sunlight down from the surface world.
  5. In the underground forest of Shey, pre-dawn light began to drip down from the starless ceiling like morning dew.
  6. * * *
  7. "And let's keep this between us." Larien released her hold on the half-orcs and slumped over in her cage. She was weakened, and needed rest.
  8. Her whispers followed them. "When the light pools into Shey, you'll hear from me." Each half-orc felt something tighten around his throat.
  9. Gruk opened his mouth to protest but thought better of it and moved off to the darkest part of the cave. Pourk stepped away toward his post.
  10. "Pourk, get back to your post, but not because Vrok-mash said so. Do it for me. Gruk you will return to your duties playing second fiddle."
  11. She pinched her hand together and Gruk and Pourk collided. She smiled, then opened her hand. The befuddled half orcs righted themselves.
  12. Unable to control his movement, Gruk's eyes bugged out of his skull. "Now, you two," Larien continued in her silent whisper, "listen up."
  13. Gruk flinched at the mention of his name and rounded on Larien. "Your tricks won't-" The elf flicked her wrist and turned him back around.
  14. "You might be surprised what I'm able to dictate, half orc." Her eyes flickered in the firelight. "Or would you prefer me call you Gruk?"
  15. He stayed facing away from her, and growled back in the Common tongue. "I hardly think you are in a position to dictate anything, she-elf."
  16. "Your minds say yes. Perhaps the three of us could profit from our situation." Gruk began to turn, but she stopped him. "Do not look here."
  17. Her voice whooshed in their ears, speaking Common. "Lur means gold or riches?" she asked, referring to the one Orcish word she'd recognized.
  18. The two half-orcs froze at the sound of Larien's voice. Her small figure loomed behind them on the floor, her lips closed and still.
  19. Pourk kept his eyes straight ahead. "I'm listening." Gruk opened his mouth to continue his pitch, but it was a whisper they heard instead.
  20. He spit through the bars at Larien and then turned his attention to Pourk. "Certainly better than taking orders from one who insults you."
