fonts are great, but they need to be tested on multiple platforms. Fonts that look fine in OS X can often be unreadable in Windows.

@ Depending on the task, bitmap masks are invaluable. Soft, complex masks for example. They're still worth exploring.

@ Start small. If it works at 16px, you can add crazy detail as you go up. That's how I approached my Creative Sense icons.
