To sum up, you should use let in RSpec, because: it's lazy evaluated, it's easier to refactor from regular vars (no @), it looks nicer.

On my rough benchmarks, JRuby 1.7 on Java 7 on rails with threadsafe=t, after 30k reqs, totally outperforms Ruby 1.9.3 (~1400r/s vs ~820r/s)
