@ Turns out Macs throw a 40 second tantrum if they cannot immediately find an HFS+ partition. Adding an HFS+ & EFI bootloader fixed it

My new SSD is very fast, but with only Ubuntu installed, my MacBook Pro just stalls for /45 seconds/ before loading Linux. wtf @ ?
