  1. All rather fun, though not enough flags.
  2. @girlgeeks College only. But all degrees in that college are now into year 2 of a total reorg that improves student abilities and skills
  3. @girlgeeks Fair enough - not all sectors or courses are like that (in my area it was heading that way and has been radically restructured)
  4. @girlgeeks It is a partnership. An SME cannot provide the breadth. The Uni cannot provide depth in specific application for all students.
  5. @girlgeeks It is about time, resources and focus. In an industrial setting you have far more time/resources to approach a task
  6. @girlgeeks I thought you understood abstraction and then specific application? The market will ultimately determine delivery.
  7. @girlgeeks But you are arguing against schemes which will enable people to gain that experience..
  8. @girlgeeks Skills which are gained by real world application, perhaps.. They are very hard to gain in toy exercises.
  9. @girlgeeks Catch22: how do you then get experience if people don't hire the inexperienced?
  10. @girlgeeks What skills do you refer to? Turning round degree programmes takes a lot of time.
  11. @girlgeeks doubt it is cheaper for employers in short term but can reduce risk and identify good hires.
  12. @girlgeeks Would you rather employ a fresh graduate with no work history, or one with references and 2 months experience?
  13. @Doctor_Hutch Sadly I can confirm that they do..
  14. @girlgeeks which is why placements are supposed to be properly managed from the Uni POV. Not just random placement.
  15. @girlgeeks FWIW I did an industrial year during my degree in the 80's/90's so this is far from new.
  16. @girlgeeks depends where you come from. Surely industry is better at delivering industrial expertise than academia?
  17. SHould say extramural year as self funded voluntary work is acceptable. Most employers pay normal wages but some can't afford to do that ...
  18. The £200/month is not payment it is to cover the additional travel expenses. We run a degree with an industrial year.
  19. @girlgeeks It is seen as an industrial partner delivered portion of the course. How else do you provide work experience and training?
  20. @andygates Interesting that they closed the flood barrier to minimise the currents
