  1. The Foundrylings were too resourceful to be killed by something as obvious as a thrown, booby-trapped weapon.
  2. He wondered if he had killed Hazakin. He doubted it. The Foundryling would have worked out what was about to happen and taken action.
  3. Every time, further up the mountain, a few loose rocks moved he would shoot nervous glances in their direction.
  4. The explosion of the weapon self-destructing shook the entire mountain and Baldenine was afraid that it would set off a rock slide.
  5. Hazakin let out a raucous laugh as the weapon slid closer. The beeping stopped him. The explosion sent him tumbling back to the village.
  6. Baldenine and his people were approaching a ridge, but Hazakin was sure he was going to catch him. Baldenine dropped his weapon.
  7. “You won’t get away from me this time, Baldenine, I am at full fitness,” he bellowed. To prove it he bounded up the hill.
  8. He strode out of the village and taunted Baldenine after the third explosion, ignoring the rocks and remains hitting him.
  9. What made it all the more delicious was that among the group so desperate to flee from what must surely be execution was Baldenine.
  10. This pathetic bunch would be of little problem to half a dozen of his men. At least were it not for that blasted weapon.
  11. Even though one of them obviously had a Foundry weapon, it was folly to try and attack Hazakin without at least an army.
  12. That thought proved to be unfounded as he watched a handful of under-armed Brigands fleeing from his men.
  13. The explosions had been a shock. It seemed that the Brigands had been lying in wait. Had they set up the finding of this village?
  14. He had just begun to look at the first of the women too. It was almost a relief as it didn’t look good for any of them being worthy.
  15. At first he had thought that it was one of the soldiers just being overzealous and firing on some small animal. Then the shouting started.
  16. Fucking Brigands, thought Hazakin. Were they really so determined to stop him from finding a wife? They were festering shits.
  17. As he ran, he fumbled with the weapon. Where had Tr’wl said that lever was? Darts spanged around him. Ah!
  18. He could already hear Hazakin’s men getting closer to them up the mountain. He dreaded to think where Hazakin was now.
  19. “We have to get to the ridge, it'll afford us cover and the terrain suits us. There’s a way into the caverns from there,” he called ahead.
  20. Baldenine refused to turn around though. He knew he wouldn’t like what he saw. Cassie was regaining her senses.
