  1. we where above the white cloud blanket with just the towering peaks of the himalayas still visable, at plane level!
  2. the pilot dropped the flaps and I swear we shot upwards almost at right angles! Several steep turns to avoid peaks and nasty bumps later...
  3. A brief pause at the end of the runway then we exploded into life, full power towardssaid mountain, then after what seemed like seconds...
  4. Add to this a warning of moderate turbulance from the pilot and my my growing fear of flying and you can get a sense of my state of mind
  5. I knew the flight from Paro would be much worse than the landing, after all the mountain at the end of the (shortest) runway wasn't moving!
  6. This was to be a truly memorable birthday, breakfast in Bhutan, lunch flying past the stunning Mount Everest, and dinner in Nepal!
  7. before I said goodbye to everyone and boarded my flight to Kathmandu, Nepal.
  8. The nest day we had about 3 hours to check out the watch tower and the amazing Dzong fortress, again witnessing stunning views of the valley
  9. The owner of the hotel had also wrapped up a couple of Bhutanese presents his sister had hand made in newspaper, gotta love these people!
  10. My guide had realised it was my birthday tomorrow so had secretly bought me a cake (with my name on it!) and a musical candle no less :p
  11. After a slow descent where I was past by children, dogs and a 90 year old women with a large backpack it was back to the hotel to die
  12. of course he did! :) But no matter how/why it was built this is truly one of the wonders of the world and whoever chose this site is insane!
  13. Legend has it a famous monk many centuries ago flew here on a tiger and meditated in a cave for 3 months before building the monastery
  14. Round the corner was a waterfall with ice at the bottom, a small rainbow and of course the spectacular Tigers Nest Monastery.
  15. yeah if I live past this section I thought! I continued and I have to say I was pleased I did, it did indeed get easier and more spectacular
  16. After a brief donkey like pause where I refused t move my guide persuaded me to slowly continue, "it gets easier after this section" he said
  17. The next stage was a terrifying series of steps & paths cut into the rock, any slip would result in a long fall, a thud and certain death!
  18. None the less we eventually made it to the steep gauge opposite the Tigers nest after a brief (ok long) stop at the cafe half way up :p
  19. I lost count of the number of times I said "wow" as we slowly made our way up, pretty sure my guide couldn't go any slower but I insisted!
  20. Still we were the only people on the mountain as we started out ascent, despite the hangover I was confident...I'd be absolutely knackered!
