  1. @kittyasuka When did we start fighting?
  2. @LnxPrgr3 I didn't take the "clone this site" type jobs, but the fixed-price people still tend to expect unlimited non-work time.
  3. Merry Christmas! Normally I'd resist the urge to post such things, but... screw it.
  4. @rowan72 OMG you did NOT just make a olsen twins reference...
  5. @jeremyvotaw 1) True interoperability would kill the main reason that people choose Windows. 2) Massive manhours required.
  6. @LnxPrgr3 No, they just take up all of your time with non-work stuff that you can't easily factor into your bid, like withheld information.
  7. @LnxPrgr3 In theory it rewards fast workers, because your effective $/hr is higher. In practice, it's the ultimate low-ball.
  8. Really? The entire contract is for $150 and you want to send me 10 emails before it starts? Fixed-price totally not worth it.
  9. @wolever I assume that's going to be published somewhere?
  10. Man blinded by ammonia in eye has sight restored by stem cells: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tyne/8425978.stm. (via @redct)
  11. @wolever We should have shown that guy this link: http://bit.ly/8oktr2 Probably too late to resurrect the discussion to show official word.
  12. @wolever The vague part is why I don't have more points there. I won't answer if I'm only kinda sure my answer is relevant.
  13. @wolever One thing to keep in mind is that most languages don't optimize things in try/catch as much (tech. limitation).
  14. @dj3vande Only reason I really said return codes explicitly, they're the common denominator.
  15. @dj3vande "Failure continuations" also requires a certain API type/language methodology to seem right. Return codes're in all real languages
  16. @wolever Un-exceptional things like file not found should be in a return code. Wrong arguments should only happen during devel. Exception OK
  17. @dj3vande I like Exceptions in practice, but pretty much all implementations I've worked with suck in one way or another.
  18. Applied for another contract. This is the longest streak of applications without an answer. I got _first_ contract quicker. Sudden downturn?
  19. @dj3vande You've seen Perl golf right? For that matter, normal perl programmers... (I was one)
  20. @wolever Wicks. It's like three inches of toppings. And good toppings!
