  1. in 12 hours (weather permitting) I'll be at the Cape Crozier penguin colony. Possibly no updates for a while, until internet repeater fixed.
  2. heading to my 'happy camper' refresher training. Kinda disappointed I don't get to sleep in a snow cave like 2 years ago. I'll get over it.
  3. just boxed up my food for 6 weeks in the field. 250 pounds of goodness: Cadbury bars, soup packets, Thai noodles, frozen veggies.
  4. there are 1,048 people at McMurdo Station right now.
  5. visited an ice cave yesterday... and while on the sea ice was visited by a few wandering groups of curious Adélie penguins.
  6. yesterday's weather was nothing short of tropical- upper 30s, sunny, and windless. A rare day for Antarctica.
  7. is finding twittermail to be very laggy.
  8. is packing in several extra desserts tonight. Gotta build up my fat reserves, I have 6 long weeks of very cold camping ahead.
  9. has been waiting for skuas to show up outside the mess hall and steal food from trays... with no success!
  10. @aphriza hell yeah bumper bars! Got those on my list (they give you a nice inventory form this year to check things off).
  11. writing out a grocery list for 40 days of camping at the Cape Crozier penguin colony... Chocolate: check. Froodles: check.

  16. is loving NZ headline news: toad found in visiting hiker's backpack. (in actuality invasive species are no laughing matter).
  17. picked up my requisite Antarctic duds today, including the aptly named "big red" puffy parka and clownlike "bunny boots."
  18. it's 77F in Christchurch, cloudless and gorgeous. And, it's 9:15pm and still light out.
  19. is creeped out by the dateline. I left Seattle on Monday and have arrived in New Zealand and it's Wednesday. what happened to Tuesday?
