Ionization type smoke detector is usually more responsive to flaming fires, Photoelectric to smoldering fires - get both for more safety.

Replace batteries at least once a year. Occasional alarm "chirping” means low battery - replace it immediately!

Smoke alarms have expiration date of approximately 10 years - replace any older ones or a newer that fails to respond properly to a test
