  1. Win tickets to 9, produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov: http://celluloidtongue.blog...
  2. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: This deliciously clever & exciting serving of inventive, big-hearted animated fun is surprisingly superb.
  3. Much-belated Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus review: http://tinyurl.com/yast4kg
  4. The Brothers Bloom: A colourful, comic con caper of real wit & warmth.Plus, most charming Rachel Weisz performance ever. What’s not to love?
  5. 2012: Emmerich’s seismic in scale, so-so disasterpiece is too long by an hour — and its grand world-razing suffers from diminishing returns.
  6. A Christmas Carol: Unappealing animation and ill-advised action beats detract from an otherwise atmospheric & faithful adaptation.
  7. The Box: Lacks the sting in the tail of Matheson’s story & Kelly remains overly ambitious. Still, this classy sci-fi morality play intrigues
  8. The Descent Part 2: Not as bad as you’d expect, but simply amplifying the grue can’t distract from the overarching sense of pointlessness.
  9. A Serious Man: The Coens’ latest marvel (it’s that time of year) rivals the best of their back catalogue. All you need to know.
  10. 9: At 79 minutes, stunning animation (some of the year’s richest) and vivid, intriguing world-building make up for fabric-thin plotting.
  11. Astro Boy: An old favourite is given a reverential computer-animated reboot that’s low on surprises but big on breezy, rocketeering fun.
  12. The Invention of Lying: A killer premise is declawed by a lapse into sloppy romcom convention. A rare misstep for the generally ace Gervais.
  13. The Final Destination 3-D: You can’t stop what’s coming to you, but you can choose to steer clear of this tedious, vapid horror fourquel.
  14. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: Gilliam’s latest and Ledger’s last might be muddled, but it’s beautifully so.
  15. Whip It: Barrymore’s behind-camera debut takes a while to get rolling, but once it gets its skates on it’s a likable (if overfamiliar) glide
  16. The Horseman: Brutal, ball-tearing Aussie revenge thriller is one hell of a calling card for star Peter Marshall & dir. Steven Kastrissios.
  17. Funny People: Could use a trim, but there’s a surprising thoughtfulness to Apatow’s slice-of-a-star’s life dramedy that ensures it satisfies
  18. Shorts: Like Pulp Fiction, but y’know, for kids, Rodriguez’s latest family flick is an icky, hyper, throwaway jaunt buoyed by a top cast.
  19. Encounters at the End of the World: Lacks the throughline of, say, Grizzly Man but Herzog’s Antarctic foray is still quite captivating stuff
  20. Van Diemen’s Land: auf der Heide’s haunting debut has atmosphere to burn. This worn tale of convict cannibalism leaves quite the aftertaste.
