@ backtype is a realtime service, currently do not show tweets older than a few months, which is much longer than other services.

@ ahh, if you're just using the js version you have to pass in a short url that is already shortened, or use an @ shortener

@ you should select bit.ly as the shortener and then use the apikey and login from bitly as described here

@ the bitly custom func uses json_decode, which may not be supported in your version of php, quick fixes exist if you're interested
