I learned something about TFT monitors: most <£400 are 'TN', which makes them all crap! Calibration is useless…darker @ top, lighter @ btm!

Spotlight fixed! I was getting worried! Deleted com.apple.systempreferences.plist + com.apple.systemuiserver.plist in ~/Library/Preferences
