AnnieSummer

  1. Are you there God? It's me, Annie.
  2. Today's the last day of summer.
  3. Today's my 13th birthday.
  4. Today I noticed the Sold sign in my neighbor's yard as I waved goodbye and watched Dad drive away to take Grandma back to the nursing home.
  5. I make a wish on the cake candles and pray that it comes true. Things will be different now, though I don't feel so different.
  6. Uncle Tom and Aunt Mary are over for dinner. Aunt Mary asks what I hope to get but I already got the best present: Grandma's here.
  7. Mom's letting me wear my new shoes. She says there's no way I can get them dirty before school starts tomorrow. Audrey smirks. So do I.
  8. It's my birthday!!!
  9. I hate when parents say that.
  10. Well, I do. I want Grandma to be there. I tell Mom that's the only gift I want. Mom says we'll see.
  11. Mom says we can open my presents tomorrow instead of at the party since the party isn't until next week. I tell her I don't want anything.
  12. My birthday's tomorrow! Mom says I'll officially be a teenager. We're having a family dinner since school starts on Monday.
  13. She asks me how badly I want another present.
  14. At Ava's house, waiting for her mom to get her little brother ready for the pool. I ask Ava if I should invite C.B. to my party next week.
  15. Maybe she's not such a bad sister after all.
  16. She said that once school starts and summer is over, everything changes anyway. I don't really understand, but it made me feel better.
  17. At dinner I told her and mom and dad what had happened. I thought she would laugh or make fun of me. She didn't.
  18. Audrey came into my room as I was reading one of her books. Either she didn't notice or she ignored it. She said not to worry about C.B.
  19. He says there's a baseball game at the park and he's meeting his brothers there. He asks me if I want to go watch, but I go home instead.
  20. But C.B. asks if the family we saw is moving in. I tell him maybe and ask him if he wants to go to the creek and pan for gold. He says no.
