  1. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark is a classic of English language novels. Paints a great portrait of Edinburgh life. 3 stars.
  2. The Avengers is pure summer blockbuster and nothing else. Sly remarks and no acting are the hallmarks of the new special effects film.
  3. City Lights is one of the timeless Chaplin films that may have been made in the 30's but stands the test of time. What a brilliant man.
  4. Questions for the Movie Answer Man by Roger Ebert is valuable but far from a necessary book for cinephiles. Good insight, however.
  5. Greece: The upside of default Greece is the country to watch and the fate of Europe is in its hands. Hard times. bbc.co.uk/news/business-…
  6. news.sky.com/home/world-new… Greece is struggling with an image problem amid growing unrest. Economy is causing less tourists, but it is still safe.
  7. The Ballad of Cable Hogue is a terrific western featuring an excellent performance by the great Jason Robards, one of my favorites.
  8. @NickKristof Thank you for still covering Burma issues, they have come a long way but still have a long way to go. Really admire your work.
  9. RIP Robin Gibb, truly one of the great figures in music and The Bee Gees are such a great group. He will be deeply missed. What a legend.
  10. @adamcb1 Looks beautiful. Congratulations!
  11. The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is a good crime drama by Werner Herzog, who is always full of surprises. Cage is great.
  12. Underneath is a very good mystery/thriller film that has got to be one of the best of the 90's. Great intrigue, a good neo noir. 4 stars.
  13. Europe, more than ever, now is the leading story and crucially important to follow. A country of 11 million people holds the world economy.
  14. Before The Colors Fade A look back by Harry Reasoner is a remarkable look into broadcast journalism's golden years. Wonderful read.
  15. Obama's statement today is something that could very well cost him the election, but making that statement is a gigantic step forward.
  16. The DNC is in NC, a state which just banned gay marriage. Obama carried the state in 2008 but will have a very hard time this year.
  17. Pauline Kael A Life In The Dark by Brian Kellow is an amazing look at one of the most fascinating people in film history. What a woman.
  18. Action in the North Atlantic is Humphrey Bogart at his best, quick talking and smooth. Great 40's movie, an undiscovered classic. 4 stars.
  19. Russian Ark is a unique 21st century film that employs phenomenal editing techniques. I can't say I enjoyed it however. Very boring.
  20. Week End is the most bizarre in every way the word is used film. Godard must have been on something during this production. Crazy guy.
