  1. Can't say it enough: verify correct use of its vs. it's. "It's" is a contraction for "it is." "Its" is possessive for "it."
  2. Moot and mute have separate pronunciations and meanings. A moot point has little value; a mute person can't speak. Say: moot and myoot
  3. Never trust spell check; it didn't show "activites" was misspelled in a document someone sent me.
  4. Heard a radio news reporter pronounce "cabal" like "cable." Cabal (kuh BALL) means a group that secretly plots something.
  5. "Atypical" (not "untypical") is used to describe something abnormal.
  6. Someone just shared with me an email in which "assistance" was misused: "Thank you for offering your assistants."
  7. Apprise is to inform (keep someone apprised); appraise is to assess monetary value (house appraisal)
  8. Simply say you agree with someone vs. using the expression "violent agreement."
  9. Remember to say "regardless," not "irregardless,"
  10. Have seen 2 incorrect uses of "repel" recently. 1st: it has only one "l." 2nd: don't confuse it with "rappel" (mountaineering)
  11. Heard someone say, "No issues have ever arised." Try "arisen" instead.
  12. A national magazine described a woman as "notorious" for her philanthropic efforts. Not correct--means well-known,but in a bad sense.
  13. Don't confuse "you're" (you are) with "your."
  14. Received an email that said the distribution list had been "paired down." You simply "pare" the list by reducing it in size.
  15. Saw a billboard that advertised a radio program on "Sunday's." Rather, it should be "Sundays" (plural--no apostrophe required).
  16. "Lightning" should describe weather, while "lightening" should be used such as, "lightening up the conversation."
  17. "Privilege" has no "d" in it (saw someone spell it ending, -edge).
  18. Even the ShamWow marketing geniuses miss things -- for example, on the box, "drys pets" is printed instead of "dries pets."
  19. Check spelling, especially before you print something. Example: saw "optomistic" on poster (should be optimistic).
  20. Be sure to check your spelling--I've received e-mails today from communications professionals with "essence" and "independent" misspelled.
