  1. Time to wrap young and/or thin-skinned trees with white tree wrap for protection from sunscald; damaged limbs more susceptible to borers.
  2. Spider mite females starting to turn orange and migrate to ground cover for overwintering; might be beneficial to target with hort. oil now.
  3. Codling moth and peach twig borer treatments end around Sept. 15 because beyond that date, eggs will not have enough heat or light to hatch.
  4. Symptoms from cane borers (crown borer, horntail, rose stem girdler) starting to show up now as dead, wilted leaves-prune out infested canes
  5. Earwigs are starting to munch on ripening peaches; carbaryl provides just 1-2 days residual; consider using tanglefoot around tree trunks.
  6. Second generation codling moth egg hatch to start July 13-20, PTB egg hatch to start July 25-29 in most northern Utah locations.
  7. A bumper crop for tart cherries means a 4-week harvest period; uneven fruit ripening requires two well-timed ethrel applications.
  8. Hail storms in June damage apples, sweet cherries in Utah, Davis, Box Elder, and Salt Lake counties. Some have lost crops.
  9. Peaches showing both peach and apple powdery mildew lesions due to wet weather, but infections will stop after peach pit hardening.
  10. Woolly apple aphids are starting to move up into the tree canopy; spider mite populations still low; lots of PM on cherries, peach fruit.
  11. Greater peachtree borer has been trapped in the Wasatch Front area and sensitive peach, nectarine, apricot should be protected now.
  12. Western cherry fruit flies have been trapped in Davis and Utah Counties. Treatments should begin when fruits develop a salmon blush color.
  13. A predatory mite, Balaustium putmani, was found in large numbers in Box Elder County.
  14. Peach twig borer biofixes have been set at several northern Utah locations: Davis, Utah, and Box Elder counties.

  16. Some apple and peach orchards have been seeing very high levels of brown mites, possibly due to reduced pesticide inputs last year.
  17. Spider mites, woolly apple aphid are slowly becoming active in orchards, but are not at threshold levels yet.
  18. Fruitworm, cankerworm, and the first spider mites detected in orchards. Lots of predators: syrphid fly larvae, lady beetle, lacewing eggs.
  19. Codling moth biofixes have been recorded for Cache County at May 17-18. Moth catch is high among most orchards in northern Utah.
  20. Fire blight risk is high to extreme for much of northern Utah thru May 22, for trees with flowers, 2+ hours of moisture, and active cankers.
