  11. Good mentors: like people; are respected on campus/in field; are open to what mentees bring to the table; share survivals tips not gossip
  12. Psycho-social mentoring: build confidence & people skills of mentee. Career development mentoring: develop competence (writing, research)
  13. Road map, lamp, walking stick: 3 things every mentor should have. Map: see the terrain; lamp: light the way; stick: test the ground ahead.
  14. Mentors: model problem-solving, give constructive feedback, set expectations, ask "Do mentees have the tools they need to succeed?"
  15. Mentoring impulse: fix problems, be wise. Instead let mentees visit w/out problems, let them speak & be heard, share power/information.
  16. Effective mentoring relationship has: respect, empathy, walking together. Tension points: gender, race/ethnic, age, sexual orientation.
  17. Mentors facilitate identity development, teach "opportunity acquisition" skills, & model connectedness as a strategy.
  18. Vert mentoring ("do this like I did") & Horiz mentoring ("I am alongside as you do your thing") are both crucial to college students
