  1. Winter solstice arrives at 12:48 PM today - Earth's axis reaches max tilt from Sun. Longest night of the year and the first day of winter!
  2. Geminid meteor shower peaks Sun nite; clouds expected. If clear tonight, best viewing after 10 PM, looking east and to constellation Gemini.
  3. Reminder: Tonight's Public Observing Night has been canceled due to an illness. Check Web site early January for new schedule.
  4. We will be canceling Saturday's (12/12) Open Night due to a serious illness in the family. Please watch for announcement of events for 2010.
  5. Great night: about 80 visitors came to the observatory and viewed Jupiter, our Moon, and star cluster Pleiades.Thanks for coming out!
  6. Chilly and fairly clear tonight: we'll be open to look at Earth's Moon: 7:00 to 9:00
  7. Saturday at Stephens: Great views of the Moon begin 7:00 PM ... IF the sky is clear! Forecast is dicey: check here or look for clear sky.
  8. Remember: IYA Image Unveiling Friday at 4:30, 123 Gerstacker Science Hall. Weather looks poor for post-ceremony Jupiter observing.

  15. Special Event Nov. 18: Observatory received mural-sized NASA image of the Milky Way galactic center. It's also Stephens' 70th anniversary!
  16. Orionid meteor shower peaks after midnight, debris from Halley's Comet. Should be a good show. Can't watch... caught cold, need rest! Sigh.
  17. Orionid meteor shower is underway, peaks Wednesday under moonless skies. Should produce 20 to 25 meteors an hour. Hope for clear skies!

  20. Clouds parted for a lovely evening though seeing only fair for Jupiter. M31 was its usual fuzzy self, double cluster a spray of diamonds!
