  1. Medal of Honor winner and reformer Dr. Mary Walker shocked us when she arrived in town in 1878 wearing trousers and top hot.

  3. The Miles Morgan statue in Court Sq. was sculpted by J.S. Hartley in 1882 and was given to us by NY banker H.T.Morgan.
  4. Before autos, Central Street hill was a popular sledding spot for children. The Board of Aldermen put a ban on the activity in 1888
  5. "The Lion" was a small fire engine bought at public expense c. 1792. Initially it had 5' of hose, but the fire chief eventually added 25'.
  6. Washington Gladden came to pastor North Congregational Church on Salem St. in 1875. A social Gospel proponent, he became nationally known.
  7. As painful memories of the Civil War faded, Memorial Day was observed more lightly with picnics, sales and motorcycle races at Hampden Pk.
  8. Decoration Day was started to honor Civil War dead. The graves of 200 soldiers in Spfld. Cemetery surround the Soldier's Rest monument.
  9. The May, 1868, Spfld. Republican called for placing "flowers, not sackcloth" on the graves of our soldiers for Decoration Day.

  18. John C. Otto was son of a German immigrant. In 1871, the 13 yr. old took a job in a local print shop and at 21, he bought the business.
  19. Casual Corner opened a store on Bridge Street c. 1950 and made its corporate home here for 20 years.
