@ And yet the DOJ is suing Apple because they provided an alternative storefront for publishers to sell books.

@ OTOH, if you invested in $AAPL as recently as 2 weeks ago you'd still be up more than 5% (38% since Jan 1).

@ In other words, "data only plans" & VoLTE are beneficial to AT&T, solves THEIR problem. To be seen how it benefits users.

@ Current LTE phones are hybrids. Current iPhones use two connections for voice & data. Future: 1. Tower radio slots are limitation.

@ Yeah, I know. But in two years, considering AT&T is already pushing 2G users off, where do you think they'll be on LTE?

Tech press regurgitates R. Stephenson's "data only" remarks as some kind of policy *change*; it is not, it is a technological one! VoLTE

Because LTE pulls voice in as a packet service, VoLTE. Why is the tech press MISSING this?

@ End users won't have a choice. TDMA users didn't ;)
2G isn't as efficient or 3G, which isn't as efficient as LTE.

@ AT&T has already slated NYC to roll off 2G. They've started sending mailers already offering free 3G handset upgrades.

@ It isn't the backhaul. The backhaul is pretty easily upgraded, linear to money in. Tower radio channels/freqs are $$$.

@ Their achilles is their tower slot capacity. And devices that hog slots hurt them (iPhone). LTE fixes that. Getting off 2G helps.

@ "Capacity" probs less to do with bandwidth, more with limited connection slots. Each iPhone opens -2-: voice AND data.

@ VoLTE is how LTE works:
Having both packet and circuit switched networks is problematic to capacity.

@ In other words, LTE is moving the carriers to an all-data world. That is the way the tech works. Current LTE phones are hybrids.

@ Actually, the whole thing is kinda deceptive; LTE Adv is VoIP. That's the way it is -supposed- to work. Won't be voice channels.
