  1. Forgot 2 mention Ben Wise (Rice History PhD) won the C. Vann Woodward prize for the best dissertation in Southern History completed in 2008!
  2. History Department Holiday party today canceled due to weather. Too late to cancel the food, though. (Heh heh. Yum!)
  3. Tip no. 8: Have a friendly faculty member read over your personal statement before you submit it. Also, if poss. the writing sample.
  4. At the 2009 Southern Historical Association Annual Meeting, seven Rice graduates participated. Bethany Johnson presented opening address.
  5. Tip no. 7: Talk to graduate students who are already in the program. Find them on the History website, Graduates, Graduate Interests tab.
  6. Tip no. 6: It can't hurt to show that you can conceptualize a research project.
  7. Tip no. 5: You did realize, of course, that you have to find a faculty member willing to supervise your PhD research?
