The Champagne Cognac regions are nothing to do with sparkling wine from NE France. The word comes from “campagne”, meaning countryside.

150 years ago cognac was made from the Balzac grape, now known as Mouvèrdre in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. All grapes used now are white grapes.
