OtterDay

  1. Cold, frost on the windows this morning. Pine Grosbeaks, Chickadees, Hairy & Downy Woodpeckers & Goldfinches will be frequenting the feeder.
  2. Tonight the stars are shining, a cresent moon shines on the bay and at 30 degrees there's a thin layer of ice is chirping--yes, chirping!
  3. Had a couple Evening Grosbeaks at the feeder yesterday--such a tropical looking bird, love them-- and a dozen Buffleheads diving in the bay.
  4. It was a day to get outside. Blue skies, calm wind, chickadees flitting about. Rosey found a grouse to keep busy with while I hiked.
  5. Woke to the full moon setting on the horizon and reflecting across the bay--quite the perfect image on Hungry Jack Lake.
  6. Will & I saw 2 moose on the way to town this morning-also saw Road and Swamper Lakes skinned over in ice. A little wind will break it up
  7. Tamaracks are brightening the gray days with their deep golden needles--they're always a bonus for those who hang on after the leaves fall.
  8. While waiting for the school bus to arrive, we had snowflakes and a local fox visit us. He had a fresh catch for breakfast in his mouth-yum
  9. Still enjoying warm fall colors. Our road is a pallette of reds and yellows, the birch and aspen still have a ways to go.
  10. Wow, perfect fall weather continues! Fireweed seed fluff, honeysuckle rich reds and random yellows paint a luscious undergrowth.
  11. Now showing:ORANGE! peach-orange on the sarsaparilla, rose-orange on moose maple, burnt orange on the cherries. More waiting in the wings.
  12. Trio of loons yodeling just beyond the dock, a wolf pauses on the Trail on the way home-amazing what just crosses my path just by being here
  13. Frost on the showerhouse roof! WOW Clear sunny days ahead--perfect for the last trips of summer--or are they the first trips of fall?
  14. There are still lots of blueberries to be picked! Last night the Barred Owl on the hill was calling "Who cooks for you?" in the stillness.
  15. Winter wren singing this morning, but without the enthusiasm of spring.
  16. Sunny, calm morning-perfect canoeing day. Hope you can get out and enjoy it.
  17. Waves glup-gluping in the rocks, an ephemeral mist rising on the shore, a seagull scans the shoreline for an easy breakfast-happy to be here
  18. Soggy day today-- not slowing down BWCAW campers heading out for a late summer trip. They'll like waking up to sunshine at their campsites
  19. 45 degrees with mist rising off Hungry Jack--loons calling. perfect morning to sit on a rock and watch the woods stretch and start the day.
  20. Busy getting things clean and dry between the rains--looks like we'll make progress today. Time to plan your Labor Day escape-- www.hjo.com
