  1. Did you know: the grizzly bear used as a model for California's state flag lived at Woodward's Gardens in San Francisco?
  2. Then I'd get a chance to go "You didn't actually read the edit log, did you? I wrote that article. 'Cept for the part about Uruguay."
  3. There's this recurring fantasy I have—being in high school again, being confronted by my teacher for plagiarizing an essay from Wikipedia.
  4. @JuicySanchez Why be mayor when you can be queen?
  5. One day I'm gonna have a kid just so I can drive 170 miles round trip to pick him and his girlfriend up in Nevada. It's just what you do.
  6. And that's how I spent my summer vacation.
  7. I've never been more happy not to be able to gamble, or to be on poorly-maintained roads that are the result of not having gambling revenue.
  8. Early Monday, somewhere far far away, a mechanic replaced two tires, rebooted a computer, and shrugged.
  9. The next 24 hours were a blur of sickness, sleep, good luck, leftovers, and still no Internet.
  10. After our 17 year-old towtruck driver got us into town, it was time for the second sunrise of the day. http://flic.kr/p/6CudsB
  11. On a Sunday. On holiday weekend. In a 4x4. At 1:30 am.
  12. The little lady stayed on the town phone for an hour while AAA figured out how to tow us 79 miles. http://yfrog.com/7hvcsgj
  13. Right after we pulled off the asphalt, the only car for the next 3 hours drove by. Naturally, it was folks we'd met at Frog Pond earlier.
  14. We only discovered our spare wasn't correctly rotating around 1 AM, when the smell of a burning corn nut factory gave us pause.
  15. Highlights of the day include catching minnows in the sulphur spring and being directly underneath about 150 firework mortars.
  16. Anyway, you can drive around on a spare just fine. You can see tons of fireworks. You can meet interesting people. All on a spare.
  17. Yes, we brought a brand new tent to the Black Rock Desert playa. We're those people.
  18. Anyway, the playa's a flat surface, right? We set up camp there, having brought the new tent that my parents had just given us.
  19. Immediately after pulling in we realized that the exceedingly loud hissing sound was coming from our tire.
  20. On July 4th, just as the sun crested over the playa, we took bumpy Jungo road out to Frog Pond. 364 miles later, we'd made it!
