  6. planning events and want media coverage? Find out what times work best in yr market. 9 and 2 are when most newsrooms meet. Plan around that
  7. Newsrooms get lots of paper. Print your message on something clever or attach it to a tray of muffins . Hand deliver for face time.
  8. Follow up with reporters after an interview. Good or bad, email to acknowledge the coverage. Offer clarification or more info.
  9. Even when the news is terrible, don't lie. Develop your message: 3 key points, get it all out at once. You'll always get caught in a lie.
  10. During 'live talk back' interview (interview by anchor in studio,) look directly into the camera. Don't bump the mike with hand gestures.

  12. During TV interviews, don't look directly into the camera. It looks creepy! Look at the reporter. I'll tell you the exception tomorrow.
  13. Media tip: Always assume every mike is live, every camera is rolling and nothing is ever really 'off the record'. Know your reporter.
  14. Keep your message concise. No more than 3 key points. Stick to these points. Don't say no comment. Just keep hitting your 3 points.

  16. Stay out in front of a story. Be proactive when it comes to addressing negative news. Never say 'no comment'.
  17. Facing a controversy? Don't hide the facts, come out with the whole story and tell it all at once. You'll limit the run of a negative story
  18. When caught in a media firestorm, don't sit back and try to wait it out. Formulate a message and respond. Get professional help, if needed
  19. Tell them what you're going to tell them; tell them; and then tell them what you told them. Repetative, but they'll remember the message.
  20. Today's Tip: Public Speaking: use a 'safety net': index cards, hold a pen, lean on the podium, look just above the heads of the audience.
