  1. Thanksgiving warning: Many turkeys sold at supermarkets are injected with a broth that may contain soy, milk, or other allergens.
  2. Tip: Always stay within an arm’s reach distance of your food-allergic toddler while you are at a playground or park.
  3. Tip: Consider buying special “allergy alert” clothing, buttons, or stickers for your young food-allergic child to wear when you go places.
  4. Soft serve ice cream isn't necessarily safe either, if the lines aren't properly cleaned out between flavors.
  5. Tip: Scooped ice cream from ice cream shops isn’t safe for most w/severe food allergies, because of the high risk of cross-contamination.
  6. Tip: EpiPen 2-packs come with 2 Epis and a trainer. Be sure to remove the trainer from the box, to avoid confusion during an emergency.
  7. At restaurants, don’t rely on the wait staff to understand and handle your food allergy needs. Speak to the manager or chef.

  11. Tip: Be sure to educate scout leaders, coaches, carpool buddies, and other adults in your child’s life about his or her food allergies.
  12. Tip: At a restaurant, ask what other foods are cooked on the grill. Do these foods contain any allergens?

  14. Tip: When you 1st arrive at a restaurant, double-check that you have your emergency meds with you. If not, go back and get them!
  15. Tip: When speaking to the chef or manager at a restaurant, don’t forget to ask about garnishes and things that are brushed onto the food.
  16. Tip: Severe allergy to fish or shell fish? Beware that seafood restaurants have a high concentration of airborne fish protein.

  18. Tip: When you first arrive at a playground, check for obvious, visible food residue on the equipment; clean it off with a wet wipe.
  19. Tip: Do not give your young child the responsibility of determining if a particular food is safe (but she can be a “helper”).
  20. Tip: Planning a trip? Try to book a direct flight. It’s easier to get special accommodations on 1 plane than on 2 or 3.
