  1. At rare moments, change rushes in, all at once, with a brass band, as in '08. More often, change is like fog, creeping slowly on cat's feet.
  2. "We're the last Anglo senators from Texas." Well, it's 12 years later. Gramm retired and Anglo J. Cornyn has won twice. Premature prediction
  3. But I still remember talking to Hutchison & her GOP colleague, Phil Gramm, in a Senate meeting in Jan. '97. They both said, & I quote...
  4. Hard to see Hutchison losing in Nov. '10 under any circumstances if she's R nominee. I suppose it's possible with Perry(39% reelect in '06).
  5. So Red TX will elect a D GOV in 2010--a year likely to tilt Red even in some Blue states? I'll believe that one when I see it.
  6. Background is media buzz about how TX will turn D because of Hispanic vote. Yes, it will-- but sometime between 2020 and 2050. It's 2009.
  7. This coincides with a nasty GOP primary fight between Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Speculation is that White will win b/c of split.
  8. The movement in TX GOV today is another example, in the other direction.Houston Mayor Bill White(D) may be jumping in, replacing a weaker D.
  9. Maybe it will happen. But House Dems are doing everything possible to make sure it won't. How about a little patience, fellow analysts?
  10. The news media and analysts used to wait for the magic '3' before declaring a trend--even though 3 isn't a trend. Now just 1 is magic.
  11. That's right, Moore's the only D in a vulnerable district who is plain retiring rather than bidding up. But silly things were said all day.
  12. Shouldn't we wait until D retirements--not counting those running for higher office--reach, say, 10 or 12? As of today, the total is ONE.
  13. The rush to be first to spot a 'trend' leads analysts astray. Rep. Dennis Moore(D-KS) retires, and media jump to declare a season of D byes.
  14. No one talked or read papers or fiddled with a PC or got up early or complained that it went overtime. They were appreciative. Hint, hint.
  15. I wish I could show the tape to classes in the U.S. Our session stretched for hours, yet they were attentive & focused & participatory.
  16. I met some of the most impressive young people ever at SIOI (Italy's training ground for foreign service). Multi-lingual, sharp, informed.
  17. Two well known author-journalists were pro- & anti-Silvio. I could hardly get a word in edgewise, and was deeply grateful for that.
  18. Saw this close up on "8 e mezzo", one of Italy's top TV shows. I'd hoped to discuss politics, but was caught in the crossfire of scandal.
  19. Politicians are the same the world over. The quest for power, fame & money lead them astray. Appetites are larger than reputations permit.
  20. Usual balancing forces are at work in scandal. Berlusconi's dalliances on one hand; one of his opponents found with transvestite & cocaine.
