@ down here, apple orchards cut down trees in March, and they will let you have the trees for free. You just have to cut them up.

@ I've made two handplanes from apple. Similar to pear, but the grain is more pronounced and the wood darker. Plus, lots of knots.

@ Any finish is food-safe once it's cured. But salad bowl finish might not affect the flavor of the beverage they way oil could.
