  5. The complications of my former life faded, one memory at a time, into the black.
  6. The darkness seemed to go on forever, so heavy it weighed down my thoughts.
  7. Thicker than air, it filled my lungs and clouded my mind until everything went black.
  8. I couldn't see it, couldn't smell it, but I felt it.
  9. The lights began to dim and I could hear a slight hiss as the gas filled the room.
  10. The voice (still cold, still feminine) told me to lay on the table.
  11. I put on the gown and tied it around my waist.
  12. There was a clicking noise and warm air began to blow into the room from hidden vents.
  13. I undressed quickly, the cool air bringing goosebumps to my skin.
  14. Folded atop the table was a simple medical gown.
  15. It was a small room, empty except for a metal table along one wall.
  16. The door sealed shut behind me and the lights came up, illuminating a sterile, white room.
  17. A voice, cold but feminine, instructed me to remove my clothing.
  18. I hesitated, unsure for just a second, then stepped into the darkness.
  19. The doors slid open, smooth and silent, like the mouth of a giant, hungry beast.
  20. I felt my chest tighten in anticipation as the crowd parted to let me through.
