  1. Yesterday the staff spotted a Northern harrier soaring low over one or our fields searching for prey. A merlin was also seen on Saturday.
  2. As of Thursday 11am we have had 3.39 inches of rain here at Howell Woods.
  3. We have had over 2 inches of rain so far since yesterday afternoon!

  5. First junco's of the season spotted this morning at the Learning Center building.
  6. Banding Update; 29 Oct 09, 16 captures of 6 species- 1 RC kinglet, 1 swamp sparrow, 5 wht thrted sparrows, 3 hermit thrushes, 4 cardinals
  7. Hunting Update; 22 Oct 2009 - One, 110 pound boar and one doe harvested this morning by our hunters.
  8. Banding Update; Thurs 22 Oct, 5 captures of 4 species. 1 ruby crowned kinglet, 1 white-throated sparrow, 1 hermit thrush and 2 wrens
  9. Banding Update; Tues 20 Oct, 5 captures of 3 species. 2 black throated blue warblers, 1 white throated sparrow and 2 Carolina wrens.
  10. Birdfeeder area has been redesigned and upgraded. Many new feeders out and the birds are enjoying our efforts
  11. First ruby-crowned kinglet was spotted yesterday on Leopold Loop.
  12. Banding Update; Tues 13 Oct, 11 captures of 8 species. First winter wren of the season, still a few migrants species moving thru
  13. First winter resident birds seen today, a flock of yellow-rumped warblers working the wax myrtles around the Learning Center.
  14. Banding Update; Thurs 8 Oct, 22 captures of 12 species. 6 species of warblers, 1 thrush species, 1 vireo species and 1 indigo bunting.
  15. About 40 5th grade students from West Smithfield were out here this morning for a field trip about habitats. They were a good group!
  16. Beautiful day at Howell Woods. There is a scheduled bow hunt this weekend but there are still plenty of open trails and open space.

  18. Banding Update: Thur 24 Sept, 21 captures of 10 species. Good mixtures of warblers, many with high fat scores (healthy birds!)
