GuineaFowlBirds

  1. We just had 3 days of snow and rain. Now we are collecting 25-30 eggs per day. Lots of folks want them, so we give them away.
  2. Winter - not much to say, as is the way this time of year. We've lost a few birds to predators and weather :( - but spring is coming!
  3. As winter progesses, the coyotes are becomiing more and more brazen in their search for food - thank heavens for the dogs!
  4. The Guinea fowl are really going through their 3rd cutting alfalfa bales rapidly this year - despite the presence of some tasty insects.
  5. 57°F yesterday. The Guinea fowl are as dumfounded as I am. Last year around this time it was frequently -30°, and snow covered the ground.
  6. The Guinea fowl got a New Year's treat of three servings of millet. We love hearing them make their "happy" sounds.
  7. Colder days and nights. The Guinea fowl always eat a LOT more when the temperature drops below 20°F, and again below 0°F.
  8. Snowing today. Undaunted, the Guinea fowl continue on their daily rounds. Amazing, for birds that originated in dry, arid climes.
  9. Mild winter so far. The birds are fat and happy - and still finding an ocassional insect to munch on.
  10. It's official. The Guinea fowl have quit laying eggs for the year. That's a sure sign winter is in the offing.
  11. Did the year's final tilling under of the 1-acre organic garden. The Guinea fowl LOVED the freshly turned earth for dust bathing.
  12. Cool, very overcast and no wind at all today. The Guinea fowl are sticking to the tree areas since they can't spot flying predators well.
  13. Took garden down today. Started tilling - too dry to finish. The Gunea fowl love dust bathing the freshly tilled soil. It's ALL for THEM!
  14. The Guinea fowl are spending the night out in the branches of the pine trees tonight. There's a full moon, nice temps and a light breeze.
  15. Still searching for good 3rd cutting alfalfa. It's the easiest, most economical way to provide greens for the Guinea fowl in winter.
  16. If you wanna know about Guinea fowl - here's a free book: Living With Guinea Fowl: guineafowlbirds.com/Book-Living-Wi…
  17. The best we can tell - the Guinea fowl won't stand still to be counted accurately - we'll be wintering 70-80 birds this year. Lots of feed!
  18. Digging in for winter. Waiting for 3rd cutting alfalfa for the Guinea fowl and sterilizing waterers. Wintering well over 70 birds this year.
  19. Started cutting firewood for this winter. The Guinea fowl were kind of enough to 'help.' They have no fear of chain saws.
  20. Weather is changing rapidly now - as always this time of year. No broody Guinea fowl hens left. The two week old keets are handling the cold
