  5. In Washington state, you're only allowed to buy beer and wine at a grocery store. Liquor, you have to buy from the state. That's just odd.
  6. I really like Seattle. The people are gratuitously friendly. It seems like a pretty relaxed place.

  9. Today's unemployment rate of 9.7% is misleading. Using the calculation method the BLS previously used, the rate would be about 16%.
  10. The Chicago Purchasing Manager's index was 50 for August, vice an expected 48. A number over 50 generally indicates an economic expansion.

  12. New home sales were greater than anticipated in July, at 433,000.
  13. Durable goods orders were much stronger than expected, increasing by 4.9%, due to new aircraft orders. Ex-transportation orders: +0.8%.
  14. The S&P/Case-Schiller Home Price Index shows house prices increased 2.9% in the second quarter.
  15. President Obama has nominated FOMC Chairman Ben Bernanke to a second term as Chairman.
  16. The Conference Board reports that their consumer confidence index rose to 54.1 from 47.4 in July.

  18. Housing starts for last month were a lower than expected 581k. Building permits were also lower than expectations at 560k.
  19. The Producer Price Index dropped more than expected, at -0.9%. Minus the volatile food and energy sectors, the core PPI was -0.1%.
