  1. I am in fear, in awful fear, and there is no escape for me. I am encompassed about with terrors that I dare not think of.
  2. What manner of man is this, or manner of creature, is it in the semblance of man? I feel the dread of this horrible place overpowering me.
  3. The Court, for it could have been no other climbed out of a side window, and I swear, climbed head down the wall, clinging to it as a lizard
  4. I cannot have imagined what I saw earlier though - for no imagination could conjure up such an illusion of the mind
  5. I am feeling this nocturnal existence tell on me. It is destroying my nerve. I start at my own shadow, and am full of horrible imaginings.
  6. My only doubt was as to whether any dream could be more terrible than the unnatural net of gloom and mystery which seemed closing around me.
  7. As he left he warned me never to fall asleep outside this room for the Castle is old and there are bad dreams for those who sleep unwisely.
  8. The Count returned to collect the letters and said he would not join me in conversation this evening, and I could scarce conceal my relief
  9. The third letter was to the bank, Coutts of London, and the fourth to Herren Klopstock & Billreuth, bankers, Buda Pesth.
  10. One of the letters was directed to Samuel Billington in Whitby, another to Herr Leutner, Varna.
  11. The Count was also busy writing letters earlier and when he left the room, I glanced at the envelopes.
  12. I have written 3 letters as the Count suggested to explain matters, but I dare not express my fears for I am sure The Count shall read them.
  13. Besides, while Count Dracula was speaking, there was that in his eyes and in his bearing which made me remember that I was a prisoner.
  14. The Count has however asked me to stay for a whole month - my heart grew cold at the thought as he said that he will take no refusal
  15. Been quiet for the past couple of days with the Count talking about little things and I trying to keep him unawares of my predicament.
  16. I was particuarly touched by his comment that "Blood is too precious a thing in these days of dishonourable peace,"
  17. He comes from a proud and noble tradition, defending the country from invaders, but he said that the warlike days are over.
  18. Managed to elicit a lot from The Count from his conversation last night, but nothing to explain the strange restrictions on my movement.
  19. Tonight I must turn the conversation so that the Count may talk of himself. I must be very careful, however, not to awake his suspicion.
  20. Bless that good, good woman who hung the crucifix round my neck! For it is a comfort and a strength to me whenever I touch it.
