  1. Went down a treat with 95 Rioja Alta Gran Reserva and Scaggs Vineyard Montage 06... Margaritas first, of course...
  2. Screw leftover turkey. Barbecued a brisket all day, made refried black beans, mac and cheese w Irish cheddar, chopped salad. Turkey tomorrow
  3. @erinswing Kroeger had more flavor, but I liked how the Eckerlin was firm enough to fry in slabs (the Kroeger fell apart; hence the canapes)
  4. Just made goetta canapes to start things off tonight, and we're not even in Cincinnati. The spuds for colcannon weigh a pound apiece!
  5. Made pizza last night w surprisingly good frozen Argentinean shrimp (Trader Joe's), crumbled feta, onions, thyme, pinenuts, minced serranos
  6. Lobster bisque with chestnuts (nice idea) at 11 Madison's 11th anniversary on 11/11. Somehow missed the fried chicken with foie gras...

  9. Farmers' market today: tiny br. sprouts, nappa cabbage, 3 kinds of potatoes, fennel, grassfed veal, & my favorite apples, golden russets.

  12. Don't buy the "Gourmet failed because it wasn't focused" argument. Circ was UP. Folks liked the breadth. The problem wasn't with editorial.

  19. Making non-traditional fideus, w favas & big beautiful dried morels I bought in the Pyrenees, cooked in strong chicken stock and morel water
  20. Just discovered Black Oxford apples (first grown in Maine, c. 1790). Delicious, tart, crisp. My favorite is still the Golden Russet, though.
