BrooksCamp

  1. Bear numbers continue to increase, with more of the Brooks Camp "regulars" making their appearance. So far today, salmon numbers are low.
  2. Brooks River water levels are still low, which is leading to a great deal of bear activity in the lower river area around the bridge.
  3. The spring cub of Bear 435 was killed by a male bear near the floating bridge today. Though not common, adult males will kill cubs at times.
  4. Large numbers of salmon continue to move upriver. Lots of family groups (sows with cubs) in the Lower River yesterday.
  5. Salmon "boils" were seen on the river tonight as more and more salmon enter the river and swim upstream. Boil: So many fish water "boils".
  6. Thunderstorm today--and lots of bear activity.
  7. We are now seeing bears at the falls almost all of the time. Last night there were 8 at one time. Summer is here.
  8. Bear activity is still concentrated in the Lower Brooks River and Brooks Camp area, with few reports of bears at Brooks Falls.
  9. An angler has caught 3 salmon so far (1 per day) but we haven't had any reports of a bear catching a salmon yet.
  10. An angler caught the first salmon at the mouth of the river today. We may see an increase in the bear population along the river soon!
  11. A report from the town of Naknek of 7 sockeye salmon caught in a net, but we have no reliable reports of salmon in the Brooks River yet.
  12. Another sow with a single spring cub was seen briefly yesterday. A wolf is still making regular appearances in the Lower River as well.
  13. Bear 435 also caught a fish while standing on the shore of Naknek Lake, but it appeared to be a pike, not a salmon.
  14. First spring cub of the season spotted yesterday! The mother appears to be bear 435, nicknamed "Holly."
  15. The Mosquitoes and white socks have been really bad lately. If you are visiting any time soon, be sure to bring a head net.
  16. A single wolf has been seen frequently near the mouth of Brooks River.
  17. @natparkhopper And when the salmon are around in July, the majority of the bears will be either at the falls or the lower river near camp
  18. 30-40mph winds today. When it's windy like this, we tend to see less bear activity at the lower river.
  19. I've been wondering: What sort of updates do you want to receive? We won't be able to provide updates on individual bears, but what else?
  20. Progress continues to be made on the BearCam. Everything seems to be working well, so we should be ready to go for July.
