Birdinglondon

  1. CES2 was a bit of a disaster, windy and as cold as winter. To keep warm we flicked three low-flying Common Swifts. Covered in parasites!
  2. Birding was fun with Bill and Frank from SC. We managed all but one of their London area wish list, though Woodlark played hard to get.
  3. Second trip with Wendy from VA. Great company, terrible weather. Hope that Lesvos was better Wendy!
  4. Great day trip with Dave from MA – like birding with a mate. 71 of 81 species seen were lifers for him. Best bird? Maybe Northern Lapwing?!
  5. Great trip with Alex and Charlotte, singing Woodlark was bettered by finding out they are professional trapeze artists! twitter.com/Birdinglondon/…
  6. Winter and spring: a female Brambling and 7 singing Chiffchaffs ringed yesterday. Also Scaups and Sand Martins present. twitter.com/Birdinglondon/…
  7. A control Lesser Redpoll came from Hollesley, Suffolk, 131km away. This is the third bird exchanged (LESRE, GRSWO and GREFI). Coincidence?
  8. Enjoyed the springlike weather yesterday plus Eurasian Siskins and Lesser Redpolls in the hand. twitter.com/Birdinglondon/…
  9. Last mopping up of a few species in TQ19 tetrads for the Herts winter atlas. Finally added House Sparrow to complete the whole square. Yay!
  10. Great satisfaction in adding (in the snow) Great Sp. Woodpecker, Kingfisher and Lapwing to a winter atlas tetrad. Feral Pig remains elusive.
  11. Spanking male Lesser Redpoll on the feeder, would give any Scarlet Rosefinch a run for its money. Others were a mixed bunch but def no Mealy
  12. On Sunday we caught, and I ringed, our first Ring-necked Parakeet for our site; a fierce bill on a rubber neck, but avoided a trip to A&E!
  13. I took an opportunity to go and see the Snow Bunting at Tring Reservoirs that has been there since November (you mustn't rush these things).
  14. The difference a new year makes: 5 days ago we caught virtually nothing at the feeders, today we processed 117 birds, including a Brambling.
  15. Back to normal with the duck trap: not a Xmas sausage. Bob's off-road 'one wheel drive' barrow made a big difference to carting the gear!
  16. The duck trap has finally caught something, only a juv Moorhen but it is a start. It will mean pre-dawn walks to set it from now til spring.
  17. All 8 rail traps are now in working condition. Some electronic way to know if they have caught would save a long walk: ‘You’ve got rail!’.
  18. Moved and updated the duck trap for the winter, adding a tunnel entrance to try and foil the Mute Swans from hoovering up the seed bait.
  19. Back down to earth this weekend with the total of 17 Blue Tits and two Common Treecreepers the best things on offer at the Broadwater site.
  20. A great session last Sunday when we caught, and I ringed, an Eastern Crowned Warbler, the second for the UK. It took a while to nail the ID!
