  1. They're set in a pile. Some have holes in them, and some have scratches on them that might be designs. Torchstone carefully cleans them.
  2. Still she seems excited by the find. Apparently, garbage is important in her trade. My find is eclipsed when Tom uncovers some stones.
  3. It's hard work. Tedious, but I find it wholesome. I find what Torchstone calls a 'midden'. I was happy until she said it was a garbage pile.
  4. We set up the perimeter of the site, and Torchstone begins telling me, Tom, and Ayn how to systematically excavate each section.
  5. Torchstone returned today around Noon. She submitted her calculations and they're gonna get back to her. We get to excavate tomorrow!
  6. Feeling better today. Helped the Professor with his latest flying machine. Looks iffy like the last one. Ayn says many things are improved.
  7. Went to mass in the morning. Tom helped the Father prepare Eucharist as always. After mass, I had a huge headache so I went back to bed.
  8. I get up early to help Torchstone carry her things. Me, Ayn, and Ellsworth all see her carriage off at 9:00 am. We bid her a safe journey.
  9. She says she will leave in the morning. I'm disappointed she's leaving so soon. I attempt to make myself well so I can see her off.
  10. She said she's going back to London to the Astronomical Society to have her calculations verified, and she should be back by Wednesday.
  11. Torchstone says her calculations show there is strong correlation between the placement of monuments and the movements of celestial bodies.
  12. Torchstone and Professor Ellsworth enter. Professor Torchstone says that her hypothesis seems correct.
  13. Still sick. Tom visited, waddling conspicuously. He got the paddle pretty badly yesterday. Ayn made chicken soup. She's nice, sometimes...
  14. Sick today. I want to help Torchstone, but Ayn forces me to stay in bed. All as well, Torchstone says she's only calculating charts today.
  15. It's late and time to leave. I rip Tom from the telescope and we all help pack up. Walk Tom to his dorm. Hope he's not in too much trouble.
  16. Ayn rigs a device to steadily trace the path of Polaris onto a diagram with junk in her pockets. There's a reason she's first apprentice.
  17. We all stargaze. Tom seems most interested in the night sky, and the Prof. teaches him names of constellations. Moon's bright. Great night.
  18. Ellsworth came with dinner and is helping Torchstone to set up a telescope for astronomical measurements to test her hypothesis.
  19. Ayn is enthralled when the Professor begins to describe the great engines in London which move on tracks, and the huge flying balloon boats.
  20. She also tells us about new anthropoids, Lycans and Lynxes. Tiercels are common and have been around forever. One came to town last month.
