  1. Last fun in Chicago: got to Jerry Bleem's reception at Packer Schopf Gallery & 3-artist reception at Dubhe Carreno. Then the travel ordeal.
  2. Watershed honors 4 ceramic "legends" at SOFA--different in origin, style and personality but all original and committed to their own paths.
  3. In Chicago for SOFA. Delighted to see Lauren Kalman's gold tongue photo, AC's Oct/Nov cover, on display at Sienna Gallery and selling well!
  4. The word is out: the Craft Council is moving to the wonderful Twin Cities, a great place to live and work!
  5. Kathy Erteman, featured in Aug/Sep AC, opened Kean U show of monoprints and clay; concurrent show at Greenwich House Pottery. See 'em both!
  6. Just about have the list finalized for the Feb/Mar issue. Now the long, anxious wait to see if the stories come together as I imagine them!
  7. In Concord, Mass. for a conversation with Warren MacKenzie. He's a pipeline to history: Leach, Hamada, Black Mountain, even Dartington Hall.
  8. At the "cliff-dwellers" art bldg, San Diego State U: it's such an upper to do studio visits & see grad students' intelligence & imagination!
  9. Met with Allied Craftsmen of San Diego, sharing good news of new energy and new interest in the field, funny stories and great potluck food!
  10. Today saw sweetgrass baskets at UCLA's Fowler--graceful forms by Mary Jackson and others in a scholarly show including African precedents.
  11. At the ACC conference in Mpls, where studio crafts and DIY will work it out instead of duke it out & Richard Sennett sees craft everywhere.
  12. Today the ACC staff said farewell to Andrew Glasgow, who has resigned the Ex. Dir. position to go home to beloved Asheville. We'll miss him!
  13. Today's treat: images of forthcoming show of a Japanese lacquer artist at Ippodo Gallery in Chelsea. Does the U.S. have any lacquer artists?
  14. Such a pleasure to spend yesterday afternoon at the Chelsea galleries. Saw craft sensibility everywhere: materials, hand, obsessive process.
  15. On the sidewalks of NY: sidestepping piles of garbage bags and a parked truck, and dodging bicycles and people, too. Urban exercise routine.
  16. Heading off to Detroit for a meeting at Cranbrook with a bunch of interesting people. I guess we'll speculate on the future of art schools.
  17. Someone asked me if art jewelers were doing anything to beautify the Bluetooth earpiece. I don't know. Are they?
  18. Will Graceland's staggeringly over-mirrored and heavy-furnitured '70s decor one day be old enough to be charming?
  19. Last highlight of Memphis: Graceland, although I'm not an Elvis fan. It was, you know, a cultural educational experience.
  20. Went to Cooper Young Festival for a taste of Memphis culture. But why was there no barbecue? I can get pronto pups anywhere (but wouldn't).
